Driver, 72, killed after her car crashed into a horse

A woman was killed after the vehicle she was driving struck a horse on a road in upstate New York, according to police.

Troopers were called after the road traffic accident involving the animal took place in Lebanon, New York, on Wednesday night.

The driver, identified as 72-year-old Janet Schwaner of Wellesley, Massachusetts, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say that the horse was also killed in the accident.

An initial probe into the crash determined that the driver was traveling eastbound in her 2021 Mazda CX-5 when she hit the horse, which was running westbound in the eastbound lane.

The incident remains under investigation.

Lebanon is around four hours north of New York City.
