Eddie Murphy says he’s been left a little confused while filming his last two movies, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “The Pickup.”
“When I had fight scenes, during the fight scene, the actors, they were improvising and they were two young guys and both of them said, ‘Come on, old man!’ I almost said cut. I was like, ‘Who are they talking to?’” Murphy told me at “The Pickup” premiere Sunday in Los Angeles. “It’s like I’m the old guy in the fight scene.”
The 64-year-old funnyman added, “It’s strange. It caught me off guard. There was another scene and he was like, ‘You a crazy old man!’ I was like, ‘Hey!’”
Murphy said he’s not sure if he’s feeling whatever 64 is supposed to feel like: “I feel like me still – just a little stiffer.”
In the action-packed “The Pickup,” he and Pete Davidson star as armored car guards and drivers who get ensnared in a heist masterminded by Keke Palmer to steal $60 million from an Atlantic City casino.
“I like working with Pete Davidson,” Murphy said. “I love his energy. He’s really funny and quick, smart, a good actor. I loved it.”
They bonded over their love of cinema and more. “We have a lot in common,” Murphy said. “Both lost our dads when we were eight, both ‘Saturday Night Live’ alumni, both stand-up comics.”
Davidson said, “I had some imposter syndrome because I was like, ‘This is my idol.’…I feel unbelievably grateful and stoked and blessed to be in this.”
Murphy’s next big screen project is reprising his role as Donkey in “Shrek 5.” He’s also signed on for a “Donkey” spin-off, which he’ll start filming in September, according to Screenrant.
Murphy isn’t surprised that “Shrek” is making a comeback. “Even after they said the last one was the final one, I’m like, ‘No way is this the final one. They’ll wait a few years and it will definitely come back.’ I think they’ll make ‘Shreks’ forever because they work. People love them.”
