Errol Spence Jr retires after losing to Tim Tszyu in comeback fight

Errol Spence Jr has confirmed that he will retire from boxing after the former world welterweight champion lost his comeback fight to Tim Tszyu.

Spence, 36, had not fought since losing the WBA, WBC and IBF belts to Terence Crawford three years ago, snatching away his zero as well as his titles after being undefeated in 28 previous fights.

The American returned to action in Sydney but came up short against Tszyu, who had Spence on the back foot throughout the bout.

Tszyu won 118-110, 117-111, 117-111 on the scorecards and Spence Jr assured that result spelled the end of his career in the ring.

“I think yeah, for sure,” Spence said when asked if this was the end of the road.

“I’ve got my faculties intact. My money is good at working for itself. Everything’s good, man.

“I’ve got a beautiful family, and I thank God I’m gracious to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family still by my side.”

Spence won his first world title in 2017 when he stopped British fighter Kell Brook at Bramall Lane in the 11th round.

But there would be no joy against a hometown hero this time, with Sydney-born Tszyu never looking particularly in danger against Spence as he grew in confidence.

The 31-year-old Australian now wants a title shot of his own.

“I had sleepless nights thinking about, ‘What am I going to feel like facing a legend like that?’ But it was one hell of a show, and I understand why he’s one of the greats,” Tszyu said.

“I’d love to fight for a title. That’s what I’m aiming for. But I’ve got to say beating a great like Errol Spence tops a world title.”
