Furious Red Sox fans slam star player for flaunting his girlfriend on Instagram with club mired in last place

Now might be a good time to check in on the Boston Red Sox fans in your life.
Already mired in last place in the American League East, the Red Sox were swept at home by the rival Toronto Blue Jays this week while mustering just four runs for the entire series.
So, when second-year infielder Marcelo Mayer shared a Fenway Park post from his girlfriend on Instagram, fans took the opportunity to air their grievances with the .216 hitter.
‘Really dude?’ fan and podcaster Nick Face wrote on X alongside a screen grab of the couple’s post. ‘Your team SUCKS @Marcelo_Mayer10 and this is what you put out on your Gram? Congrats on your GF but how about giving some effort to improving your skills to better the BASEBALL team! Be better!’
And with that, the floodgates were open.
While some media members objected to the post, many embittered Red Sox fans were quick to second Face’s opinion.

Mayer was hitting just .216 entering Friday after entering 2026 with bigger expectations
‘Personal life is separate,’ MassLive.com’s Chriss Cotillo responded on X. ‘Relax.’
Like Mayer, Costillo quickly found himself at the center of the controversy.
‘What a stupid f***ing response by you,’ one irate fan responded to Costillo. ‘Stop your pandering bulls***. That post was spot on.’
Some Boston fans managed to keep their sense of humor. As one wrote on X: ‘Nice to see someone on the Red Sox is scoring for a change.’
Others sounded as though they were more disappointed than angry.
‘Pics like this just stir up Red Sox nation and he knows this,’ one fan wrote on X. ‘So my question is why bring more attention to yourself and the numbers you are putting up?’
‘Mayer is such a meh player what a disappointment,’ another added about Mayer, a former first-round draft pick who has taken a nosedive in his second season in the majors.
But the vast majority of comments on social media condemned the view that Mayer was somehow at fault for re-posting an image his girlfriend shared on Instagram.
‘I love the psychosis that Red Sox fans operate under,’ Barstool’s resident Red Sox fan, Hogdale, wrote on X. ‘The baseball team sucks therefore you should be b***less, alone, and drowning in depression. If you reach a state that is beyond this as a player you should be stoned to death.’
A former first-round pick, Mayer’s struggles haven’t stopped him from enjoying his personal life. Here he is with girlfriend Camryn Bergman, a student at Boston’s Northeastern University
Even Face walked back his comment after it drew a half million views, 256 comments and 486 likes.
‘This is all about time and place,’ Face wrote Friday. ‘Truly am happy for Marcelo and his girl. This went out directly after getting swept by the Jays. It should have waited IMO until morning. The central focus for the kids from my sources has been all about the nightlife and socializing, not the team!’
Not much is known about Mayer’s relationship with Camryn Bergman, who describes herself on Instagram as a student at Northeastern University in Boston.
Mayer, 23, is a California native and former fourth-overall draft pick who has played second, third and shortstop since debuting during the 2025 season.
The listless, injury plagued and offensively challenged Red Sox are in Seattle on Friday night to face the AL West-leading Mariners.
The team has already fired manager Alex Cora and replaced him with Worcester Red Sox skipper Chad Tracy on an interim basis.
‘Gotta fire Alex Cora again,’ podcaster and Red Sox fan Jared Carrabis wrote on X. ‘Enough is enough.’
