G-20 against Su-57: the ghost confrontation between China and Russia

A comprehensive comparison between the Chinese G-20 fighter and the Russian Su-57 fighter, the most prominent fifth generation ghost planes. An analysis of the difference in design, combat capabilities, military beliefs, and the role of each plane in the air superiority race.

Arab Defense website-September 9, 2025: In the Modern Air Martial battlefield, two names are strongly highlighted in the scene of the Fifth Generation Fighter aircraft: Chinese fighter Xingdo G-20 known as “The Great Dragon”, and the Russian fighter Sukhoi Su-57 “graceful falcon”. Although both were designed to dominate the sky, the philosophy behind the design of each plane reflects a fundamental difference in the military doctrine of each country.

The Chinese fighter relies on a long streamlined design with front wings (Canardes) and a structure to reduce the radar fingerprint. Its primary focus is the clash behind the extent of vision, striking goals from long distances, and deep penetration into the protected atmosphere. ASA radar and advanced capabilities to integrate data and communicate with combat networks, to serve as a pivotal knot in the Chinese “network war” strategy. Also, its long-range missiles PL-15 give them the upper hand to strike opponents before they discover their presence, while PL-10 missiles provide confrontation options in near fighting when necessary.

However, the engine remained an essential weakness in the G-20, as it initially relied on Russian AL-31 engines before China started using its local WS-10 engines and working to develop WS-15, which is expected to give the plane the “super cruise” ability, that is, flying at speeds that exceed the speed of sound without the need for subsequent burning.

Su-57: Russian flexibility fighter

As for the Russian fighter, it is the fruit of a different vision. While it gives it the techniques of concealment a good ability to reduce the radar fingerprint, its design has never been clear with the ability to maneuver. With the Thrist Vectoring technology, the plane can implement sharp and complex maneuvers that make it superior in the fiery fighting. Work is currently underway on the latest Izdeliye 30 engines, which will provide a greater payment and higher efficiency.

Soo-57 is also characterized by its ability to carry a wide range of weapons, from long-range R-R-73/K-74 fighting to fight, up to directed munitions and smart bombs, making it a multi-tasking combat platform that includes air superiority, ground attacks and electronic reconnaissance.

Technically, the plane relies on a unique radar system N036 bylka, which combines X-PAND and L-PAND matrixs distributed on the plane’s structure, giving it an advantage in monitoring ghost planes and resisting interference. Electronic warfare systems and self -protection systems such as DircM (infrared jamming) enhances their ability to remain in complex combat environments.

The difference of philosophy and function

G -20 is the Chinese deterrent doctrine based on preventing the opponent from approaching by controlling large areas of airspace using long-range missiles, which is consistent with the “A2/AD” strategy in the vicinity of the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait.

On the other hand, Su-57 was designed to embody the Russian doctrine based on flexibility and survival in various fighting conditions, where the plane can play multiple roles in one mission, from air superiority to electronic attack.

Hundred -57

In terms of numbers, China is clearly outperforming, as reports indicate that more than 200 G-20 fighters entered active service, to form a huge operational force. Soo-57 is still in a limited production stage, with Russian plans to expand production and export.

On the strategic level, G-20 represents an explicit declaration of China’s rise as an air force comparable to the United States, in the face of F-22 and F-35 fighters. As for the Su-57, it represents a Russian message to the world, according to which Moscow, despite the sanctions and economic challenges, is still able to produce a advanced fifth generation fighter and prepared to fight against diversified opponents.

The comparison between the G-20 and the SO-57 is not just a technical comparison between two planes, but rather a reflection of two different military philosophers. The G-20 is a silent killer, dependent on the hide and the distant range missiles to win before the start of the fighting. Russian Su-57 flexible warriors, depends on maneuvering, survival and the ability to adapt to a chaotic fighting atmosphere.

In the end, the superiority between them remains subject to the conditions of the battle. If the clash is from afar, then the dominance is conducted for the Chinese dragon, but if the fighting enters a close distance, the Russian hawk owns the upper hand. Thus, every plane not only reflects advanced engineering capabilities, but also embodies the doctrine and strategic vision of the country it produced.
