Hero NYPD cops filmed saving life of suicidal woman who climbed Brooklyn Bridge in vertigo-inducing video

A team of fearless NYPD officers scaled the towering cables of the Brooklyn Bridge to save a woman threatening to jump.

The extraordinary operation unfolded on Wednesday evening after police received multiple 911 calls reporting a person in distress on the iconic bridge.

Officers responded at about 7.38pm and found a 31-year-old woman on an elevated area of the bridge before members of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit climbed up to reach her.

Video released by the department shows ESU officers carefully inching along the bridge’s suspension cables toward the woman, who was sitting on a narrow steel beam near the bridge’s towers, which rise about 276 feet above the roadway.

For nearly an hour, the specially trained officers spoke calmly with the woman, urging her to accept help as traffic backed up below and crowds gathered to watch the tense rescue.

Body camera footage captured one officer introducing himself as he slowly approached.

‘You okay? My name is Chris. What’s your name?’ he asked.

‘I just want to talk. What’s happening today? I want to help you. That’s why I’m up here right now.’

As the conversation continued, the officer urged her not to make what he described as a permanent decision.

‘It’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It really is,’ he said.

‘I don’t know what you’re going through, but I wanna understand.’

‘We have services we can get you to.’

‘The strongest thing you can do right now is accept help. I promise you, that’s the strongest thing you can do.’

The woman had climbed onto one of the bridge’s suspension cables and was sitting on a narrow steel beam above the roadway as officers secured themselves with safety straps before climbing out to reach her.

Aerial footage showed the woman perched alone on the beam while ESU officers carefully made their way toward her, suspended high above the East River.

As officers finally moved in to rescue her, the footage appeared to show the woman briefly trying to wriggle free from their grasp before multiple officers pulled her to safety.

‘Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Please, please, please,’ one officer can be heard pleading.

‘I got you.’

‘You’re not in trouble.’

‘Everything is going to be okay.’

Video then showed several officers, clipped into safety lines, slowly escorting the woman across the narrow beam before lifting her back onto the bridge.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised the officers Thursday while sharing footage of the rescue on X.

‘This video of a rescue last night on the Brooklyn Bridge will take your breath away,’ Tisch wrote.

‘High above the East River, NYPD ESU officers climbed onto the Brooklyn Bridge to reach a woman in crisis who was threatening to jump.’

‘For nearly an hour, they stayed with her, spoke with her, and waited for the moment they could safely pull her back from the edge.’

‘The care, courage, and compassion these officers showed was just extraordinary. May God bless them.’

The rescue forced authorities to temporarily shut down the Brooklyn-bound lanes of the bridge while officers worked to bring the woman down safely, causing significant traffic delays across Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

According to police, the woman was safely removed from the bridge and transported to Woodhull Hospital for evaluation. No injuries were reported.

Officials have not said why she climbed onto the bridge, and no additional details about her condition have been released.
