An entire hospital and multiple schools have been plunged into an urgent lockdown after shots were fired in a rural town in Queensland.

Access was restricted to Kingaroy Hospital, 200km west of the Sunshine Coast, at 6.15am on Wednesday following the incident.

The town of Kingaroy was placed in a partial lockdown after a number of gunshots were fired from a home on Arthur Road about 4am.

A number of people fled the property before police arrived.

Other businesses, including schools, have been advised to close on Wednesday as police respond to the incident.

A 25-year-old man, believed to be armed, remains on the loose.

Police believe he may be travelling in a black Suzuki Swift, with false number plates displaying 551 GE9.

The man is described as around 175cm tall, slim build, Caucasian with brown hair and brown eyes.

Members of the public are urged not to approach the man or his vehicle.
