I Tried 28 By Sam Wood For A Week And Consider Me Locked In

How fortuitous. I had just decided I needed to lock in when Sam Wood’s fitness app fell into my lap (not literally, don’t come for me Snez).

I’ve been trying to be a gym girlie for the better part of a year, but it’s hard to know if I’m doing it right when I’m just following stuff you see on Instagram.

It’s not like I’m trying to do some full-body change-up — I know I’ll never be Megan Thee Stallion — I just want to do my cute lil workouts and then go get a smoothie in my cute lil workout fit. Is that too much to ask?

With all that being said, I was stoked to get the chance to test out 28bysamwood, mainly because a week of working out with legit trainers seemed like the ideal way to kick my fitness journey into full gear.

Offering the ultimate mix of workout videos, PT tips, healthy recipes, and mindful meditations, this app is like having an expert in your pocket — only better. Personally, I loved the unexpected call from a ‘health coach’ who took the time to help me get going but also promised to check in with me in a month to help keep me accountable (thanks for having my back Lily!).

For those of us who struggle to fit a healthy lifestyle into a hectic schedule, it’s almost too good to be true.

Without further adieu — let’s get cracking.

The work week

To kick things off, I did a meditation on the tram to work, which is honestly so out of character for me. The 16-minute guided session helped me shake off a chaotic morning (tradies, running for the tram, grabbing my housemate’s keys by mistake, etc).

While it probably looked like I fell asleep, I was actually reframing my week ahead, setting goals and intentions, and basically proving I was better than everyone else. I was a fan.

Meditation aside, the fitness element was what I was most excited about. Tuesdays are my upper-body day, so I tried a strength class with Tania.

Often when I’m exercising, I feel like I’m not doing things right, but this guided workout kept my form on point and pushed me the whole way through. Oh, and I actually did the warm-up and cool-down — two things I usually skip.

One evening, I was tasked with cooking dinner for my housemates. I had no plans, hardly any ingredients, and a dream. Luckily, the app’s meal guide came through with a Thai Green Curry recipe and shopping list. 20 minutes later, I had a delish dinner that kept my housemates fed and me feeling superior.

Now, like many (including Mark S), I find it tricky to balance my innie and outie life. To help with that work/life balance, I decided to put my app to use during the working day. I went on a run at lunch time — who am I, Bella Hadid?

Sam coached me through my intervals like I had my very own PT, and I ended the hour having lived, laughed, and loved outside rather than doomscrolling on TikTok like I usually do.

I followed it up with the insanely delish and nutrish Chopped Green Salad, which was the quickest thing to make before I went back to the office (AKA my kitchen table).

The (very) long weekend

Friday was a public holiday here in Melbs, so I started my day with a luxurious sleep in, followed by brekky and a coffee outside. I managed to make the pear porridge in about five minutes and then I was back to relaxing. Is this heaven? I think so.

I eventually worked up enough energy to exercise. Having worked out for 6 months at this point, I felt my progress had stalled and, as I’ve gone up to heavier weights, I’ve had more twinges in my back. Please spare the ageing jokes.

When it comes to glutes in particular, I know that my form is lacking. I searched the app for glute exercises and found a real in-depth tutorial for good mornings. Under Sam’s tutelage, I managed the perfect move. Winning.

Now, full transparency: this trial fell on Grand Final weekend, AKA one of the most social weekends Victoria has to offer. Come Sunday, I was exhausted, and while I knew moving in some way was necessary, going to the gym seemed as difficult as climbing Everest.

This is where the app came in clutch. I searched up a twenty minute yoga routine I could do in the comfort of my own room. It made me feel healthy and accomplished despite having not left my room. I topped it off with some protein ice cream in bed, so your girl is basically a bodybuilder now.

On my final day with the app I needed to hit the gym hard, and there was only one woman for the job: Tiff. She’s the ultimate PT—keeping your form in check and eyes on the prize all the way to the end. I can be a laid-back girl when it comes to my workouts, often cutting the odd corner, but that was not possible here. The TXO x Tiff video sure held me accountable and by the end, while I may have been on the floor in a puddle of my own sweat and tears, I was already excited for more.

So, what’s the verdict?

While my muscles are sore as hell (shoutout to Tiff for that one), I feel amazing. The app made exercise fun, flexible, and actually doable. I was excited to try new things, and it felt good switching up workouts to fit my schedule and energy levels day to day.

From searching up recipes to training with the best PTs, this app is the perfect tool to bring wellness into your everyday life. Where other apps give you the resources then send you on your merry way, the personalised touch of a team member checking in on your journey — offering guidance and a hand to hold (if you need it) — provides the extra support needed to reach your goals.

So if you, like me, have been longing to lock in but didn’t know where to start, this could be the answer. What’s more, we’ve got a special discount up for grabs, so click here to sign up and let yourself live your best healthy life. Sam’s right — you won’t regret it.
