Iran strikes Gulf energy infra, hits UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait

DUBAI: Critical infrastructure across the Gulf came under attack from Iran on Sunday, with damage reported at civilian facilities in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait.

Gulf countries have faced repeated drone and missile attacks from Iran in recent weeks in response to US and Israeli strikes that began in late February.

Tehran has targeted energy and industrial infrastructure in the oil-rich region, accusing its neighbours of allowing US forces to launch attacks from their territory – claims the Gulf states have strongly denied.

In Abu Dhabi, authorities said they were tackling fires at a petrochemical plant in Ruwais Industrial City on the UAE’s northwest coast. The emirate’s media office said the blaze at the Borouge facility was caused by falling debris following air defence interceptions. Operations were suspended while damage is assessed, with no injuries reported.

Iran’s army said it had targeted “aluminium industries” in the UAE and US military infrastructure in Kuwait, according to state media. The country has repeatedly threatened civilian infrastructure in the Gulf, even as US-Israeli strikes have hit key sites in Iran.

In Bahrain, the state energy company said a drone strike caused a fire at a storage tank, which was later extinguished without injuries. Also Read: Trump threatens Iran with ‘Power Plant Day’ if Hormuz stays shut

Kuwait’s electricity and water ministry said two power and desalination plants were damaged in a drone attack, forcing the shutdown of two generating units and causing significant material damage.

The attacks have also raised concerns over desalination plants, a critical source of water for Gulf nations.
