Iran-US war latest: Iranian gunboat fires on container ship in Strait of Hormuz after Trump extends ceasefire

A gunboat belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has opened fire on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, just hours after Donald Trump announced a ceasefire extension.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO) said the attack happened around 7.55am in the strait and targeted a container ship, which was damaged but did not suffer casualties.

Iranian state media claimed the country was “lawfully enforcing” its control over the strait.

Earlier, Trump promised to extend the ceasefire between the US and Iran, while blasting Tehran in a Truth Social tirade after it backed away from peace talks.

The president announced that he had ordered the US military to continue to blockade Iranian ports until Tehran’s leaders and representatives came up with “a unified proposal”.

Iran has refused to send negotiators to Pakistan for talks until Trump lifts the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Middle Eastern officials told Politico.
