Kamel Al-Wazir: Developing 14 commercial ports in Egypt to advance the maritime transport industry

Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, said that in the axis of developing seaports, there are currently 19 commercial ports in Egypt, 14 of which have been and are being developed. He added that the axis of developing seaports includes the construction of berths and stations, as it was planned to establish new berths and stations with a length of 70 kilometers and depths of 18 to 25 metres, bringing the total length of berths to 100 km, which allowed Egyptian ports to receive within 10 years from “2015 – 2024” 1.6 billion tons of general cargo, liquid bulk, and dry bulk, in addition to receiving 72 million equivalent containers, of which in 2024 only 210 million tons of cargo and 9 million containers, including 5 million transit containers.
He pointed out that the axis of developing seaports includes the construction of breakwaters, as it was planned to construct breakwaters with a total length of 35 kilometers, including “the northern breakwater in Alexandria Port” The western breakwater in Damietta Port – The breakwater in Al-Arish Port – The breakwater in Jarjoub port.
Kamel Al-Wazir pointed out that within the framework of the axis of developing seaports is the work of refining and deepening the shipping lanes, as the trading basins in the ports were dredged to reach depths of “18-25 metres”, stressing that in 2016 and in implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to recover the waste and wreckage of sunken ships in the port of Alexandria, a number of 21 ships were recovered. sunken, in addition to recovering a number of 5 fishing boats, deepening and clearing the shipping lanes to receive giant ships, and reaching global rates of development of the shipbuilding industry, pointing to the reception of various Egyptian ports such as "Alexandria– Dekheila – Abu Qir – Damietta – East Port Said " For a number of giant ships of international shipping lines.
