Lorde Discusses On Gender Identity & Chappell Roan’s Straight Up Question

In recent years, Lorde has been openly “broadening” her own idea and experience of gender.

At the Met Gala 2025, the Kiwi pop star was open about how her grey Thom Browne skirt, half-bandeau top and blazer combo was a statement about how she views her gender identity.

“To me, it really represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman,” the Solar Power singer said.

The statement encouraged questions over Lorde’s gender identity and which pronouns the singer feels most comfortable using. Now, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Lorde has opened up about where she’s at in her gender journey — and the time Chappell Roan straight up asked her if she was non-binary.

Chappell and Lorde have become pretty close this year, with Lorde even giving the “Pink Pony Club” singer advice on how to cope with fame. After becoming tight pals and watching her gender expression shift, Lorde said that Chappell asked her whether her viewpoint on her own gender expression had changed.

“She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’” Lorde shared with the publication.

“And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’

“I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.”

In Lorde’s upcoming album, Virgin, she explores her battle with an eating disorder. Once she managed to overcome those struggles, she felt a shift in the way she viewed herself and her gender.

“My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room,” she said.

“I think coming more into my body, I came into an understanding of the grotesque nature of it and the glory and all these things.”

Despite describing herself as being “in the middle gender-wise”, Lorde tells Rolling Stone that she still feels like a cis woman who uses she/her pronouns.

“I don’t think that [my identity] is radical, to be honest,” Lorde declares.

“I see these incredibly brave young people, and it’s complicated. Making the expression privately is one thing, but I want to make very clear that I’m not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me. Because I’m, comparatively, in a very safe place as a wealthy, cis, white woman.”

Lorde’s album Virgin will be out on June 27.
