Lorde Opens Up About Drugs, PMDD & Gender Fluidity In Honest New Interview

Lorde is getting seriously real about… well, pretty much everything. Lately, she’s been talking more openly than ever about things like drug use, mental health struggles and where she actually sits in the gender conversation. She’s bringing out everything into the open and we are loving the transparency.

Speaking to Dazed, Lorde was asked when she first tried MDMA or ecstasy. “Too young,” she admitted. She confirmed it was her drug of choice for a period, before explaining she’s spoken in the past about MDMA therapy helping her tackle stage fright.

She told Rolling Stone in June this year that this “changed the game” for her, making it possible to feel comfortable on stage again.

Lorde also discussed living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), which she described as “a proper clinical depression that happens cyclically”.

After coming off birth control, she noticed “very significant dips in mood every month” and was diagnosed with the condition.

“There’s actual treatment for it – I take the tiniest dose of Prozac, snapped in half, once a month. And it genuinely has made a huge difference to me. It’s been, like, exact days of the month – but it’s changed the game,” she told Dazed.

The gender chat? Lorde keeps it refreshingly loose. People have speculated about her pronouns after the Solar Power singer spoke about her outfit at the Met Gala. “To me, it really represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman,” she told Vogue‘s Emma Chamberlain.

Lorde explained to Dazed that nothing’s changed — she just sees gender as an ongoing journey: “It’s all a journey. I have no idea where it’s gonna go; it doesn’t feel like I’ve arrived anywhere permanent at all… I’m excited to find out where that lands, if it ever does land.”

Earlier this year in a Rolling Stone with fellow singer Chappell Roan, Lorde commented on the Met Gala moment.

“She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’” Lorde shared with the publication.

“And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’

“I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.”

Lorde also clarified with Dazed what Chappell really said to her: “I think I misquoted that – I feel really bad. She said, very sweetly, something like, ‘So your pronouns are changing?’”

She also talks missing New Zealand and making “being home” more of a priority. Oh, and in what’s probably every Kiwi’s nightmare, she confesses she’s never seen Lord of the Rings.

“Bad Kiwi, I know. I’m not really into fantasy,” she confessed.

This all comes at a huge moment for Lorde — with her fourth album Virgin already topping charts here and overseas, plus the massive Ultrasound World Tour set to hit arenas in Auckland and Christchurch next February.
