Married At First Sight (MAFS) 2026 has officially come to an end, and while the Reunion was quite explosive, fans (and I) are sobbing over the beautiful tribute to Mel Schilling that closed off this year’s experiment.
For many reasons, this year’s season of MAFS stands out from the rest. But most importantly, it’s the last season that features the late Mel Schilling in its Experts panel.
On March 24, 2026, Gareth Brisbane, Mel’s husband, shared a statement on Instagram, confirming that the beloved expert had passed away following her battle with colon cancer.
“Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love,” Gareth wrote.
“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life. It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me,” he continued.
“This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both.
“This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming.
“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”

Honouring her one more time, the MAFS 2026 Reunion ended with a beautiful tribute to the beloved expert, who was filmed hugging all of this year’s brides before the screen faded to a beautiful portrait of the late expert.
The tribute to Mel featured a montage of her work on the show, including moments where she uplifted women who might’ve given up on love, sharing her own love story and a beautiful image of her and her family.

The touching tribute ended with a closing speech from Mel that almost felt like a message to not only the rest of us, but also to herself.
“Thank you so much for your time in the experiment. For your courage. Your authenticity. We salute you and wish you all the best and happiness in the world,” she said.
Married At First Sight fans share their love for Mel Schilling following the Reunion tribute
Mel joined the MAFS Experts panel back in 2016 and became a major part of the show alongside fellow Experts, John Aiken and Alessandra Rampolla.
In 2023, Mel revealed that she’d been diagnosed with colon cancer, and days before her death, she announced that the cancer had spread to her brain.
Alongside the Reunion’s emotional tribute, Aiken led an on-air tribute on Channel Nine the day after her death.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. MAFS will never be the same without Mel. RIP, you absolute legend.
