Netflix has started early talks about a sequel to Kpop Demon Huntersits outsized animated musical movie hit that just became the streamer’s most watch movie ever.
Deadline confirmed the discussions Tuesday. Netflix declined comment.
The anime-style movie, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, has amassed 236 million views on Netflix since its June 20 premiere as of Sunday. That allowed it to pass 2021’s Red Notice on the streamer’s all-time Most Popular English Films list.
That milestone, confirmed today, comes after a sing-along version of the film hit big screens in the U.S. this past weekend, finishing No. 1 at the box office with an estimated $19.2 million — a first top-of-the-box office finish for Netflix. The sing-along version then dropped on the streamer at midnight Sunday.
The Maggie Kang- and Chris Appelhans-directed pic centers on Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), young-adult pop stars in a group called Huntr/x, whose ancient demon slayer lineage has them moonlighting as demon hunters when they aren’t selling out stadiums and topping charts. When their biggest demonic enemy (Lee Byung-hun) encourages the formation of an equally popular K-pop boy band aimed at stealing the souls of their fans, the trio has to fight harder than ever to hold the demons at bay while keeping their friendship intact.
