NFL quarterback who broke down when he signed $10m contract linked with another life-changing move

The emotional NFL quarterback who went viral after signing a $10 million contract extension last year could be set for another life-changing move.

Tyson Bagent broke down in tears when he addressed the media after being given a two-year contract extension with the Chicago Bears last August.

He spent last season behind Bears starter Caleb Williams, playing a minor role in three games over the course of the season as they went on to reach the playoffs.

But now Bagent has been linked with a trade to the Arizona Cardinals this offseason.

Veteran Phoenix area radio host John Gambadoro claimed this week that they are considering him as a replacement for Kyler Murray, who is widely expected to leave.

‘Have heard the Cardinals are intrigued by Bears backup QB Tyson Bagent,’ he posted on X.

‘He has one year left on his deal, so would have to trade for him. Grew up in Martinsburg, West Virginia and went to Shepherd University.

‘Was an undrafted free-agent who beat out PJ Walker for the backup job with Chicago and was so good the Bears signed him to a two-year $10 m extension.’

Gambadoro then quickly clarified that Bagent has got two years left on the Bears deal that left him so emotional last summer.

Bagent, who grew up in Martinsburg, West Virginia, was clearly overwhelmed by such a lucrative payday and told reporters that his father dealt with major struggles as a child.

A teary-eyed Bagent, 25, said: ‘My dad is my right-hand man. He didn’t even have running water until he was in high school.

‘There are definitely a lot of things and people that I think I could certainly help with this gift I’ve been blessed with.

‘I don’t really know anybody back at home with any money so it feels good. It’s certainly a weight off my shoulders and my family’s shoulders and it definitely means a lot.’

Bagent played in four games and threw two passes in the 2024 season with Williams starting every game after being drafted with the No. 1 overall pick that year.

Undrafted in 2023 following a record-setting career at Division II school Shepherd University, Bagent played in five games and made four starts while leading Chicago to two wins with Justin Fields injured.

He completed 66 per cent of his passes for 859 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions.

‘I’ve really been blown away by his approach from the spring to start of camp to where we are now,’ coach Ben Johnson said last year.

‘He does a tremendous job knowing what to do, how to do it and getting it done. So I don’t think you can have enough talent in that room. I think we actually have one of the best rooms in the NFL, certainly that I’ve been around in my career from top to bottom.’
