Pranksters go on hunt for Mitch McConnell placing ‘missing person’ posters around DC

Pranksters have plastered posters across Washington, D.C. seeking information about Senator Mitch McConnell, who remains hospitalized and hasn’t been seen in public for over a month.

“MISSING PERSON,” the posters state in large red letters above a photo of the Kentucky Republican convalescing in a hospital bed. In a description section, the signs state: “84 years old. 5’9 feet. Turtle-like.”

“Known for: Blocking something in the Senate. Distinguishing features: Tortoise like appearance,” the signs state. They were taped to poles outside the Capitol and near an emergency room, according to photos posted by Save America Movement.

“We put those flyers up because this has gotten absurd,” SAM, an ant-Trump political group, said in a Wednesday Substack post. “For more than a month now, the senior senator from Kentucky has not cast a vote, has not appeared for the work of the chamber, and has not, in any provable or functional sense, represented the four and a half million people who sent him there.”

McConnell, who is set to retire at the end of his current term in January 2027, was admitted to the hospital on June 14, according to a spokesperson. For weeks, his office offered only sparse updates, fueling speculation about his condition —including from MAGA activist Laura Loomer, who wrote that the lawmaker was “brain dead.” Conjecture intensified after footage emerged of first responders outside McConnell’s home following a report of an unconscious person.

On July 12, McConnell finally issued a lengthy statement alongside a photo of himself recovering in a hospital bed with his wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao. He said he’d been admitted to the hospital after a fall and had developed a mild case of pneumonia.

“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion,” the former Senate majority leader said. “I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.”

The senator’s office issued another update Monday, saying he is “still working hard to get back to my full schedule.” In the statement, a physician said McConnell is undergoing “physical therapy and rehabilitation” and has not yet been “medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.”

Despite these updates, McConnell has faced mounting pressure to offer more transparency about his condition.

On Monday, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to the 84-year-old senator asking him to “directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.”

During a July 15 interview, Beshear told journalist Katie Couric he’d received “two calls from different agencies, not state agencies, suggesting he’s passed,” according to The Courier Journal.

A Republican lawmaker has made a similar admission.

“I don’t know if he’s alive or has passed away,” Indiana Rep. Marlin Stutzman told NewsNation on July 9. “I have not heard from him, and I think it’s a question that Republicans should be asking because he does represent the state of Kentucky.”
