Fourth Wing fans, rise up!!! Rebecca Yarros has announced she’s back at her desk. You know what that means? We’re one step closer to book four, so we may finally get answers for that horrendously huge cliffhanger that we’ve been stuck on since January.

The author posted a carousel to her Instagram this morning to celebrate a cadet’s most exciting (or dreaded) day: Threshing. The start of the caption read “October First is always Threshing.”
It’s a GREAT day to be a Fourth Wing fan!

Rebecca’s carousel began with a photo of Fourth Wing opened at chapter 13, which was Violet’s Threshing (IYKYK). The album then flicked through to show new Wing and Claw hard cover editions of Fourth Wing ($63.40) and Iron Flame ($61.50) available to purchase — which are GORGEOUS, mind you — and various other life updates like musical visits and being inducted to the Colorado Authors’ Hall of Fame.
And while we’re so glad she’s back at her desk and ready to continue on with the Empyrean series, it comes with a bittersweet note that she’ll be logging off social media for a little while.
Her caption read:
“October First is always Threshing. Hiya peeps!” she began.
“When I turned in Onyx Storm to the printer a year ago, I promised myself and my family I would take a year off. In that year ‘off’, I wrote and edited a full graphic novel, started another, plotted and started writing a new contemporary novel, and signed about 120k tip-ins. Yeah, I don’t sit still well.
“But now it’s been a year, and I’m back at the desk full-time, learning how to juggle my priorities all over again. Since it’s Threshing, which always turns the Empyrean world upside down, it seems like a good time to step away from socials for a bit. I love IG, but it definitely has the power to drain my time and energy, which are needed elsewhere right now.”
She concluded her post: “Be good to each other while I’m away, and here’s one last carousel of the last few weeks!”
So her ‘year off’ was really just a break from her favourite dragons, because Rebecca kept herself booked and busy.
When Is Fourth Wing Book Four Coming Out?
Back in mid August, Rebecca said in an Instagram comment that she’d begin plotting the fourth book “probably in the next six weeks or so. I like to plot one project at a time, but I’m still in the thick of it with plotting the contemporary”. And she stayed true to her word! She’s now ready to sit down and break our hearts all over again with the next edition of the Empyrean series.
While her Instagram caption didn’t explicitly state that it’s Fourth Wing book four that she’s working on, her fans are pretty damn sure that’s what we’ll be getting next from the best-selling author.

Rebecca hasn’t announced an official release date for Fourth Wing book four, but we’re expecting it to drop some time within the next two years.
While some fans were theorising that the author would release the book in January 2026, one year after Onyx Storm, Rebecca Yarros said on her Instagram Story that unfortunately that was just a rumour, and a turnaround time that quick was impossible.
Hey, she wrote Fourth Wing in three months, so it’s not crazy for fans to think that!
Fourth Wing Book Four Theories
Naturally, fans have a bunch of theories as to what’s going to go down in Fourth Wing book four. After the huge cliffhanger she left us dangling from?! It’s inevitable.
If you need a reminder on how Onyx Storm ended, we covered that over here.
In true Taylor Swift-inspired Rebecca Yarros fashion, the author has dropped a bunch of Easter eggs. She has confirmed a few key aspects to the plot, like that a dragon is lying about her name, but who? There’ll also be a bit more of a focus on Dain and Sloane as their romance blossoms, and we’ll be seeing a more serious side to Ridoc through his own storyline.
Confirmed: There Will Be Multiple POVs
At the end of Onyx Storm, we got chapters in multiple POVs, rather than the usual Xaden POV chapter. This is confirmed to continue for book four, but whether it’s all throughout the novel or just at the end is yet to be discovered. We’re keen to step into the minds of the other characters!
Who Turned Venin At The End Of Onyx Storm?
The biggest question everyone is asking is who TF turned venin alongside Xaden?
Fans are theorising it’s either Garrick or Bodhi. Xaden notes that the mysterious new venin ‘brother’ watched him struggle with becoming Venin over the months, so he’s shocked that the new venin chose to turn. Both are viable options, since Garrick was reaching near burnout teleporting all over the battlefield, but kept on pushing. Bodhi’s narrative arc over Onyx Storm also positions him as a primary suspect, since he’s second in line for the Tyrrish throne — a title he’s made clear he doesn’t want.
Is Violet Part Venin?
Another aspect fans keep speculating about is Violet’s hair. Some readers think that Violet’s actually part venin, which is why her hair is drained of colour at the end. One theory is that Lilith was gravely ill during pregnancy and had to channel to survive. However, in Onyx Storm Violet finds out that her father dedicated her to the temple of Dunne when he took her to the Isles as a baby, which is why she believes her hair is silver. Regardless of which is correct, Rebecca said that there’s a reason why her hair is silver.
Fans also think that Violet’s hair has turned entirely silver. At the end of Onyx Storm, both Brennan and another officer are “staring oddly” at Violet when assessing her for injuries. This is before Brennan notices the ring on Violet’s finger, so it wasn’t the marriage that caught him off guard in the first place. Since Violet and Xaden got married in Dunne’s temple, this coulddd mean that Violet has completed her dedication, which would change her hair colour to match that of a temple priestess.
Violet Is Pregnant
One wild fan theory that some readers have is that Violet is pregnant — or will be pregnant by the end of Fourth Wing book four. In Onyx Storm, the need for an heir to secure the future of Tyrrendor is brought up more than once. And while Xaden and Violet don’t explicitly have a deep and meaningful about having a child together (they’re just trying to survive the war), the irids mention to Violet and Andarna that while there’s no cure for venin, “their offspring could evolve”.
So does that mean that Violet and Xaden might bang it out in some passionate ‘I love you’ or ‘goodbye forever’ sex reunion and conceive a child?
I NEED TO KNOWWWWW!
