Shaken Aussie mum’s warning to parents after an elderly man approached her toddler son at the library

A young mother has issued a warning to other parents after an unsettling encounter between a stranger and her toddler at a Gold Coast library.

Rochelle Evrard was left shaken after an elderly man took her 15-month-old son Hughie’s hand before making a chilling comment about how easily he would go with someone.

The mum initially questioned whether she was ‘overreacting’, but after the encounter continued to play on her mind, she decided to share her experience in the hope it would encourage other parents to be more vigilant.

Rochelle explained she and Hughie had never attended the library session before and had expected it to involve singing and dancing.

Instead, it was a sit-down reading session, which proved difficult for her energetic toddler.

‘My son is super busy, and he did not want to sit down and read,’ she explained in a TikTok video detailing the encounter.

Instead, Hughie began happily ‘waddling around the library’, with Rochelle following closely behind him.

At one point, she noticed an older man waving at her son but initially thought little of the interaction.

Rochelle said Hughie eventually wandered in the man’s direction, and he bent down and held his hand out towards the toddler.

Hughie, who his mum described as ‘super friendly’, instinctively put his hand into the strangers.

But it was what happened next that made Rochelle’s stomach drop.

‘This man just held his hand and then he looked at me and said, “Well he’d go with anyone”,’ she recalled.

Rochelle immediately scooped up her son, replied, ‘That’s concerning’, and walked back towards her friend at the rhyme time session.

But as she tried to explain what had just happened, the interaction began to feel increasingly unsettling.

She couldn’t shake the question of why a stranger would initiate physical contact with a toddler before commenting on how willingly he might leave with somebody.

‘Who holds a strange kid’s hand in public?’ 

‘Who goes over and entices them in and then makes a comment about how easy he would go with someone?’ 

Rochelle’s friend encouraged her to report what had happened, as did another father attending the children’s session, although by that stage she believed the man had already left.

Upon notifying the library’s manager, she also asked whether they had CCTV footage of the interaction to properly visualise the uncomfortable encounter.

‘You start doubting yourself. Did that happen?’ she said.

But while Rochelle was still speaking to staff, she said the man unexpectedly walked back inside.

Rochelle said she was later told the man explained he had been walking out as Hughie was walking towards him, that the interaction had ‘just happened’ and that his comment had been made in jest.

‘I really hope it was super innocent and that that was just the interaction.’

Daily Mail is not suggesting the man intended to harm or abduct the child, and Rochelle herself acknowledged the encounter may have been innocent.

But it was the realisation of how willingly her toddler had taken a stranger’s hand that left the young mum deeply shaken.

‘I had tears in my eyes because I was like, “imagine if he just walked out with my son”,’ she said.

For the protective mother, the experience has served as a sobering reminder that even when a parent is just one step behind, it can take only seconds for things to take a turn.
