Sydney Sweeney defended by canceled comedian Matt Rife amid American Eagle jeans ad backlash

The canceled comedian Matt Rife is running defense for Sydney Sweeney after fans attacked her for her appearance in a controversial American Eagle jeans ad.

The 29-year-old comic — who recently faced controversy of his own after starring in an ad for E.l.f. Cosmetics — jumped to X on Friday to offer a response to the Euphoria actress addressing backlash over ads touting soap made with her own bathwater.

Matt’s tweet came in the wake of Sydney’s latest movie, Americana, bombing at the box office.

‘I keep seeing people mad at Sydney Sweeney for noooothing,’ he wrote.

‘She’s learning that the internet is full of absolute garbage losers who will twist anything you say into a c***y misinterpretation people are awful.’

Sydney was engulfed in controversy late last month after she appeared in an American Eagle denim campaign that had the tagline: ‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.’

Some social media users slammed the campaign and labeled it as 'Nazi propaganda,' while other fans branded the woke backlash as 'unhinged'

The ad blew up on social media, where critics claimed the ad was pro-eugenics and supported far-right politics.

American Eagle has since also defended the star in a statement released earlier this month.

In one ad, the Anyone But You actress could be seen buttoning a pair of denim blue jeans while saying, ‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My genes are blue.’

Another clip filmed the star wearing a denim jumpsuit with a plunging neckline on the front as the camera panned down towards her chest.

‘My body’s composition is determined by my genes,’ she said, and then stopped to add, ‘Hey, eyes up here.’ The camera then jumped back up to her face.

Some social media users slammed the campaign and labeled it as ‘Nazi propaganda’ while other fans branded the woke backlash as ‘unhinged.’

Sydney was later defended by American Eagle, as the clothing company released a statement amid the backlash.

‘”Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” is and always was about the jeans,’ the brand wrote.

‘Her jeans. her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.’

Insiders also revealed the impact that the ad starring Sydney has had on the brand, claiming that 70 percent of the reaction to it has been positive.

Earlier this week, the actress hit back at critics who claim she is cashing in on an over-sexualized image.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sydney explained, ‘I think it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience.’

One of the star’s recent deals includes her collaboration with Dr. Squatch, for which she sold a limited-edition line of soap allegedly infused with her actual bathwater.

‘It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting,’ the actress said in response to the backlash. ‘They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater.’

Sydney was then questioned if she is ‘thinking strategically’ when it comes to sultry or provocative campaigns, and she replied, ‘Yes. Very.’

However, the blond beauty did not address the backlash she received for her latest American Eagle ads.

'It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting,' the actress said in response to the backlash over Dr. Squatch soap she advertised that allegedly is infused with her real bathwater. 'They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi's bathwater'

Not long after the denim campaign dropped, Sydney’s political party was revealed.

The Hollywood star is a member of the Republican Party of Florida, according to public voter records viewed by Daily Mail. She registered to vote in Monroe County, Florida, in June 2024.

Sydney recently starred in the crime thriller titled Americana alongside other cast members including as Paul Walter Hauser, Halsey, Eric Dane, Simon Rex and Zahn McClarnon.

The film was released in theaters on August 15 – but has bombed at the box office.

Tony Tost — who both wrote and directed the movie — came to the project’s defense with a post on X on Thursday.

‘One of the great things about movies is that they outlive the zeitgeist into which they were released,’ the filmmaker wrote.

‘As someone whose first film sorta got gobbled up by the zeitgeist, I’ll be curious to see how it’ll stand up after this moment is over. Hopefully fairly well!’

The ad was first released last week and is a parody of the commercials from New York-based law firm Cellino & Barnes.

Matt has previously been embroiled in controversy after he made a domestic violence joke during his 2023 Netflix special Natural Selection.

In response to the negative reaction, he linked to a website that offered helmets for those with disabilities.

‘If you’ve ever been offended by a joke I’ve told — here’s a link to my official apology,’ he wrote at the time.

After Matt’s appearance in the latest ad for E.l.f outraged some fans, the company publicly issued an apology.

‘You know us, we’re always listening and we’ve heard you,’ the brand said in a statement.

‘This campaign aimed to humorously spotlight beauty injustice. We understand we missed the mark with people we care about in our e.l.f. community.’

The company concluded with, ‘While e.l.f.ino & schmarnes closes today, we’ll continue to make the case against overpriced beauty.’
