The Block’s Winning Auctioneer Reckons The Houses Would’ve Sold With Lower Reserves

The winning auctioneer on this season of The Block has claimed the show could’ve avoided *that* disaster of a finale if the houses were “priced… as we were instructing them to”.

ICYMI, fans (and contestants) of the reno reality show were left in a state of disarray last week when only three of the five houses were successfully sold at auction, leaving Emma and Ben and Han and Can with zilch as the homes in Daylesford, Victoria went under the hammer.

A whole host of people offered their two cents in the wake of the flop Auction Day, including winners Britt and Taz and supposedly banned buyer Adrian Portelli — but now, auctioneer Mark Nunn has put the gavel down on why season 21 failed to deliver.

Nunn — who helped Britt and Taz score their winning $420,000 above reserve result — told realestate.com.au that he believes the asking prices, decided by the network, were too high for the country town, and said all the homes would’ve sold if they were given the reserve price he had suggested.

“The price was wrong. The houses were great houses, they were just too high on the price. Had they priced them as we were instructing them to, we would have sold them all under the hammer,” Nunn said.

Nunn went on to claim that he had advocated for a $2.6 million reserve for Britt and Taz’s home, well above the nearly $3 million it actually received, adding that lower reserves — and therefore sales above asking price — would’ve meant that the “whole narrative around the success of the show would have been different”.

The auctioneer also said that The Block’s choice of a live auction was at odds with how people buy homes in Daylesford, but said the sale of three homes was still a “phenomenal result” given the stats of the area.

“If you look at it objectively, and strip the TV part out, to sell three houses under the hammer at auction for more than $3 million there is a phenomenal result,” Nunn said.

Nunn’s comments add the the chorus of folks who’ve weighed in on the finale, with Britt and Taz saying contestants might fare better next season given its location in Melbourne’s affluent Mount Eliza, and Portelli claiming season 21 failed because “these houses aren’t targeted at everyday Aussies”.

Elsewhere, The Block realtor David Holmes said the “supply-and-demand scenario wasn’t looked at efficiently” for Daylesford.
