‘The Studio’ EP Says Martin Scorsese Was Careful Not To Be “Backseat Director” During Cameo

Despite his decades of critically-acclaimed experience in motion pictures, Martin Scorsese knows when to stay in his lane.

After the Oscar-winning director played himself in the premiere episode of the Apple TV+ series The Studioco-creators and executive producers Alex Gregory and Evan Goldberg said Scorsese “was unbelievable” in his cameo but refused to step on anyone’s toes.

“He had one note, but he didn’t give it until later,” Gregory told People of the episode directed by Goldberg and star Seth Rogen.

“There was a moment where him and Charlize Theron were whispering to each other, and it took like 10 takes to get the shot,” recalled Goldberg. “And then we got it and I was like, ‘What were you whispering about?’ He was like, ‘I knew you were doing this wrong, but I didn’t wanna be a backseat director, so I just didn’t say anything.’ And I was like, ‘Well, we could have used that time, but I appreciate that you didn’t wanna manhandle us.’”

Gregory said they were “all pretty shocked Martin Scorsese was in the show,” as Goldberg praised him, “I think unanimously we would say Martin Scorsese as an actor was unbelievable.”

“The fact that he actually showed up, ’cause we kept thinking, ‘He’s gonna cancel. It’s too amazing. It’s too special. He’s just the best,’” added Goldberg.

In The Studio‘s March 26 debut episode ‘The Promotion’, newly crowned Continental Studios head Matt Remick (Rogen) pursues Scorsese’s passion project about the Jonestown massacre while shepherding a conflicting Kool-Aid movie.
