The UNESCO General Conference approves the election of Khaled Al-Anani as Director-General of the Organization

The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), at its current session held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), approved Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, the former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, as Director-General of the organization, after he was elected and obtained 172 votes out of a total of 174 votes.

UNESCO stated, in a statement today, Thursday, that Al-Anani is scheduled to assume his duties. Officially on November 15 for a four-year term, he succeeds Audrey Azoulay, who has held the position since 2017.

On October 6, Dr. Khaled Al-Anani won the position of Director-General of UNESCO for the period from 2025 to 2029, succeeding the Frenchwoman Audrey Azoulay, after a vote that took place among members of the Executive Council at the organization’s headquarters in Paris.

Anani (54 years old) received the award. 55 votes, compared to only two votes for his competitor, the Congolese candidate Fermin Edouard Matoko (69 years old), who holds the position of Deputy Director-General of UNESCO for External Relations.

The result was decided in favor of Dr. Al-Anani after the Executive Council voted by secret ballot, announcing the election of Al-Anani to the position of Director-General of the international organization, which aims primarily to contribute to establishing peace and security by raising the level of cooperation between the countries of the world in the fields of education and culture.

And today the General Conference adopted The organization elected Al-Anani as Director-General of the organization. With this victory, Dr. Al-Anani is the first Arab to head the organization since its founding 80 years ago, succeeding Audrey Azoulay, who held the position for two terms, and the second African to hold this high position after Senegalese Amadou Mokhtar Mbo (1974-1987).
