The Voice Australia’s ‘Biggest Shake-Up’ Revealed & Explained

The Voice Australia is back for 2026, but this time, the singing competition has a massive twist that absolutely changed the game.

Over the years, The Voice has faced a bunch of changes, especially when it comes to the coaches.

However, for The Voice Australia 2026, we not only got an extra coach, but we also got “the biggest shake-up in The Voice history”, which will blow the minds of our OG coaching panel —Melanie C, Richard Marx, Ronan Keating and Kate Miller-Heidke — when it’s finally revealed to them.

What is The Voice Australia 2026 plot twist?

In this year’s shebang, not only did we get a fifth coach — who was announced to be “Dance Monkey” songstress Tones and I earlier this year — but her place on the coaching panel will remain a secret throughout blind auditions, so she can help those who failed to impress the judges the first time around.

For those curious about the logistics of how they’re keeping the singer a secret coach: Tones will be sitting in a separate swingy chair that’s unseen by the judges, audience and contestants.

If the contestant fails to swing any chairs with the OG judges, Tones can decide whether or not she wants them on her secret team. If she chooses to do so, she will take them under her wing, train them up, and send them back out for another blind audition!

ALSO, she can see who’s performing on stage; according to the screen we see she’s watching.

Her decision will only be shown via a screen backstage; therefore, the judges will not know of Tones’ secret team until later on in the comp.

It’s sneaky, it’s sweet and honestly, as an emotional person, I LOVE when someone gets second chances at their dreams.

When she was announced as a part of this year’s coaching panel, Tones and I said she was “excited” for the gig.

“I grew up watching The Voice, as any aspiring singer, artist, or songwriter would,” Tones said.

“I’m so excited. I can’t believe I get my very own big red chair with my very own big red buzzer – it’s very showbiz of me!”

The Voice Australia has just kicked off for 2026. Watch it on Channel Seven and 7Plus.
