Thousands evacuated as bushfire rages north of Los Angeles

The blaze comes at the height of the wildfire season in California, with an extreme heat advisory in effect for nearby areas warning of temperatures up to 41 degrees Celsius. About 400 firefighters were tackling the fire.

Further north past Santa Barbara, the massive Gifford fire, which started a week ago, has now burned through 100,000 acres, with about 15 per cent of the front line contained. Nearly 3500 personnel are fighting the blaze.

Los Angeles and surrounds are still reeling from the devastating fires in January that destroyed thousands of buildings, including homes in the LA suburbs. The two most destructive blazes, the Palisades and Eaton fires, killed 31 people and caused about $US50 billion worth of damage.

The death toll rose to 31 last month when human remains were discovered on July 21 at a burned-out home in Altadena, more than six months after the Eaton blaze started. A 74-year-old man who lived on the same block had been reported missing, The New York Times reported.

An academic paper published in the Science Advances journal on Wednesday concluded that human-induced climate change was driving an earlier start to the California bushfire season, by about six to 46 days depending on the region. Continued warming was expected to exacerbate the trend, the authors said.
