President Donald Trump resorted to ‘your mom’ jokes when he his rally speech in Texas was repeatedly interrupted by hecklers.
Trump appeared on stage at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio Wednesday evening to drum up support for Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
At least a dozen demonstrators interrupted the president during his address, with some led away by police.
“He’s going back home to mom,” Trump said as one of the hecklers left. “But what he doesn’t know is his mom voted for Trump.”
In footage from the event, Trump can be seen smiling as the crowd of his supporters boo the protesters.
“Now I’m telling you they pay them for this. But do we have a good time?” Trump said, before pursing his lips.
Interrupted again, Trump lashed out: “That guy’s got to lose a lot of weight.”
At one point, Trump appeared to become so frustrated he made a direct appeal to any further opponents in the crowd.
“If there are any more paid protesters, please raise your hand and get the hell out of here,” he said.
Footage recorded by USA Today showed one man shouting as he made his way through the crowd of Trump supporters, filming while being pursued by another wearing a MAGA hat.
Trump has thrown his weight behind Paxton’s campaign despite Texas usually being a reliable state for Republicans during elections.
However, Trump’s approval ratings, concerns over the cost of living and the war with Iran have allowed Democrat James Talarico’s campaign to gain considerable ground and have put the Democrats in play to win the Senate race.
Wednesday’s appearance marked Trump’s third trip to Texas in less than a month, and party officials have devoted more than $300 million to elections in the state so far.
At the rally, Trump appeared confident about his party’s chances in the looming midterm elections.
“With your support, 27 days from now, we’re going to crush ‘dumocrat’ communist James ‘Tala-freak-o’,” he declared, using a nickname he invented for the Democratic Party and for Talarico.
Trump spent most of his remarks focused on the Senate contest, describing Paxton as “perhaps the greatest attorney general in the United States of America.”
“He was tough and he was with us all the way,” Trump said of Paxton, whom he endorsed in the state’s GOP primary over incumbent Sen. John Cornyn. “He’s a fantastic man.”
Paxton appeared to make a slight blunder during his own speech as he asked the crowd to pray.
“Pray that we will be delivered from socialism and cap-…” he said, before pausing and correcting himself: “From communism.”
