Trump offers ‘assurance’ US troops won’t be sent to Ukraine

“I think Putin is tired of it,” Trump said. “I think they’re all tired of it. But you never know. We’re going to find out about President Putin in the next couple of weeks. That I can tell you.”

The White House is eyeing the Hungarian capital of Budapest as a venue for a possible trilateral meeting between Putin, Zelenskiy and Trump, Politico reported on Tuesday, citing a Trump administration official and a person close to the administration.

The US Secret Service is preparing for the summit in the Central European nation, with the capital city emerging as a first choice for the White House, Politico reported.

NATO military leaders are expected to meet on Wednesday (Thursday AEST) to discuss Ukraine and the way forward, US and NATO officials said on Tuesday, as Washington and European capitals work out details of what security guarantees might look like for Kyiv.

Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chairman of NATO’s military committee, said there would be a video conference on Wednesday.

Officials pointed out that the meeting was taking place during unique circumstances and expected topics such as the security guarantee to be discussed.

The British government said what is known as the Coalition of the Willing, which met virtually on Tuesday, had agreed that their planning teams would meet with US counterparts in the coming days to advance plans for security guarantees for Ukraine.
