Ukrainian tactics targeting Russian air defense systems S-300 and S-400

Arab Defense website-October 7, 2025: The Ukrainian army depends on targeting Russian air defense systems on an advanced mixture of technical capabilities and field tactics, as it resorted to using the ADM-166B Mald missiles in conjunction with the “Delta” system or similar systems. This lüneberg lens is adjusted to simulate the radar signature of complex air targets such as Scalp-EG and Storm Shadow, with a radar clip about 0.03 square meters. The range of the missile, which reaches 900 km, allows its launch from safe distances, saves the bearing platforms away from the scope of direct targeting.

The Ukrain is based on the implementation of these attacks on the launch of large batches of MALD missiles, with the aim of flooding the Russian defense network with fake offensive waves, while controlling the missiles to simulate a radar signature similar to the real Cruise missiles. At the same time, the Western AWACS aircraft provides the Ukrainians a comprehensive tactical image, allowing them to monitor radar activity of Russian defense systems accurately. On the other hand, the Russian side depends on operating radars such as 30nn6e2 and 92 N6 to set targets, and then launch 48n6 and 40 N6 missiles from safe distances, this process leads to the locations of Russian air defense systems and forcing them to deal with an additional burden, by flooding scoring channels with fake targets.

Once the sites of these Russian systems are located, Atacms missiles are directed with cluster warfare to strike them. Ukrain takes advantage of the presence of a “dead corner” ranging between 40 and 50 degrees above each battery, giving the missile an opportunity to reach its goal. In addition, the cluster warhead raises the effectiveness of the attack, as it makes the missile interception using the “collision of the Hit-To-Kill” target “less feasible, even the destruction of the solid fuel engine does not stop the attack, and the explosion near it leads to the spread of cluster munitions, which increases the possibility of destroying the target.

In response to these tactics, Russia has resorted to strengthening its defenses using electrical systems, which can distinguish between real and fake goals. Mald missiles are unable to simulate the heat signature of the powerful Tri Microturbo engines 60-30, which prompted Russia to deploy the “Banstare” systems intensively, which owns an advanced EO/IR system of 10ES1-E, able to detect and distinguish Scalp-EG missiles at a distance of at least 15 km, which reduces the effectiveness of interference attempts.

Moreover, the Russian army adopted the strategy of re-moderation of radars and a wide spread of S-400 and 300 systems, while enhancing protection by medium and short-range air defense systems, to create an integrated defensive network that reduces gaps and limits Ukrainians to exploit the “dead corner”.
