Tech is taking over. Sometimes that’s great—other times, a little scary. While we pine for analog in many aspects of life, art, and beauty, we believe that technology has a place on our faces.
If you ask a dermatologist (we asked Marisa Garshick), they’d say, “High tech facials utilize different technologies, such as microcurrent and LED lights, to help improve the overall appearance of the skin.”
Sounds perfect, considering at this point, most of us already indulge in those at home as we Netflix and glow.
And while we won’t discount the magical effects of excellent products and skilled hands, we like to lean on innovation for stubborn skin concerns and the age-old force known as gravity. We tapped JJ Walsh, founder of the super techy facialist boutique called Formula Fig, for her thoughts on gadgets for glowing.
First of all, what constitutes high tech?
“Think ultrasound, diamond tip microdermabrasion, nanoneedling, and
radiofrequency, to name a few,” JJ tells us. “These are the absolute gold standard when it comes to boosting collagen and promoting deep skin rejuvenation, but they’re definitely not gadgets the lay person should attempt to use on their own.”
These tools go beyond traditional facials that hydrate and use various forms of technology to improve radiance, firm, and lift the skin. But JJ goes even further to say that the aforementioned advancements aren’t just for the ultra-skin-tapped-in.
“High tech facials don’t just boost your skin. They transform the entire experience.”
And are high tech facials and devices better than your standard (or more “natural”) facial?
We won’t say that they are in every aspect. Very little can compare to the touch of a warm-blooded human sumptuously and, dare we say lovingly, sculpting our faces with their nimble, strong hands. So we won’t compare.
But we will say, why not have both?
Facial massage and natural stone tools can help relieve tension, direct lymph flow, and boost blood circulation—all heroic feats when it comes to skin health. But incorporating routines that include microneedling, radiofrequency, lasers, and clinical wavelengths of light and energy give us the power to transform our skin’s texture, clarity, elastin, and sebum production.
In short, it’s not only possible to make our skin healthy, but we can actually teach it to look, behave, and age better. Essentially, triumphs over time and genetics that were never possible before are within our reach now.
And, as JJ points out, we don’t all have to become pros to diagnose what we need.
High tech facials are all about customization for specific skincare concerns. You can always enjoy some relaxed maintenance at home with an LED mask or a little self-loving massage. But don’t forget to schedule a tune-up with a gadget-fluent pro for a true futuristic glow-up.
