Wild moment junior reporter accidentally inhales cannabis smoke during live cross in resurfaced footage

Sunrise star Katie Brown has revealed the wild moment she accidentally inhaled cannabis smoke on live TV during her years as a junior reporter with Nine.

The Seven presenter, 34, shared a throwback video of the incident to Instagram on Thursday, showing her younger self standing near a pile of marijuana plants.

A fire blazed in the cannabis behind her, with smoke rising into the air as Katie reported that police were disposing of the plants following an earlier drug raid.

However, a stroke of bad luck hit as the wind suddenly changed and blew the marijuana smoke straight into Katie’s face during the live cross.

Crew members behind the scenes could be heard laughing as Katie bent over coughing.

‘POV: you’re a junior reporter covering a marijuana raid and the wind changes,’ wrote Katie, who began her career with Nine before moving to Seven.

‘Don’t remember how my story finished, but I remember being so hungry all day. Throwback to maybe 2012/13 in Coffs Harbour!’

Katie previously revealed herself to be among Australia’s hardest-working TV journalists in 2024 when she gave a glimpse at her day-to-day life.

The Seven star took to Instagram to reveal her hectic daily schedule, which saw her take two interstate flights and host multiple interviews in one day.

She began her day at 3.30am after staying up until midnight to enjoy a ‘movie marathon’, before making her way to Seven studios to host Sunrise Sport at 5.30am.

Katie had breakfast at 6.30am before heading to Sydney Airport for a flight to Brisbane at 9am.

Upon arriving in the Queensland capital, the presenter hosted six interviews before sitting down for a gourmet buffet lunch at midday.

By 3pm she was flying back to Sydney, before catching an Uber back home in time for dinner and an early bedtime.

‘Terrific Tuesday,’ she wrote next to a photo of herself looking weary while giving a thumbs up to the camera.

Moments later, Katie shared a photo of herself running on a treadmill.

In her caption she added: ‘Forgot to mention my two plane naps – sorry-not-sorry if you saw me drool [laughing-crying emoji].’

She also clarified that her days aren’t usually so busy, describing this particular Tuesday as a ‘ballistic, fun, crazy kinda day’.

Katie, a former 7NEWS Queensland sports reporter, joined the Sunrise team in 2023.
