The new German government decides to keep nuclear weapons on its soil

The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Bierbock, stated that Germany does not plan under the new government to become a nuclear power, but at the same time it will retain its participation in securing the “nuclear umbrella” of NATO.

“The goal of all of us is a world without nuclear weapons,” Bierbock said, “Germany has never been and will never want to become a nuclear power.”
The Minister believes that one of her duties is to contribute to the realization of specific international agreements in the field of nuclear disarmament.

At the same time, she stressed that Berlin “in no way questions NATO membership or the obligation to participate in the” nuclear umbrella” program, which provides for the deployment of nuclear weapons on the territory of Germany.

The exact number of nuclear warheads on German soil is unknown, but experts estimate that there are about 20 of them (hydrogen bombs of the type B61).
