OSCE on Press Freedom Day: We need strong, independent and pluralistic media

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe extended its sincere congratulations to journalists in all countries of the world on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, stressing the urgent need for strong, independent, pluralistic and reliable media, more evident than ever.

 

A statement by the European Organization said on Friday that on World Press Freedom Day; The Maltese presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe emphasizes the pivotal role of the independent press in addressing global challenges and crises. 

The statement stated that free media constitute the cornerstone of democracy and an essential part of the comprehensive approach adopted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation. In Europe in dealing with security, pointing out that as a key factor in shaping public discourse, the media works to empower citizens to participate in public debate and make informed decisions while also working to hold leaders accountable, including on climate policies.

Minister Ian Borg, current Chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, stressed – in a statement – that “strengthening the resilience of the public and our democracies by combating disinformation and strengthening a free media landscape is a critical commitment of the Maltese presidency,” noting that “our priorities include education.” media and information services and ensuring the safety of journalists, especially female journalists, so that they can carry out their essential role.”
