Joint statement of the major nuclear powers

The five powers with nuclear weapons – Russia, China, the United States, Britain and France – indicated in a joint statement that there would be no winners in a nuclear war, according to the Kremlin’s website.

The statement read: “We declare that there can be no winners in a nuclear war and should not be unleashed. As the use of nuclear weapons will have far-reaching consequences, we reaffirm that nuclear weapons – as long as they continue to exist – must serve defensive purposes, deterring aggression and preventing war. We believe that the further proliferation of such weapons should be prevented.”

In the statement, the leaders of the five countries also indicated that no country would indicate the target of nuclear weapons to other countries, and that Russia, China, the United States, Great Britain and France would strengthen measures to prevent the “unintended use” of nuclear weapons.

The leadership of these countries also affirmed their commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
