Malaysia welcomes South Africa’s new request before the International Court of Justice to stop the genocide in Gaza

 Malaysia praised South Africa’s resolute efforts to stop the genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, welcoming its new request to refer to additional provisional measures before the International Court of Justice against Israel in the two-day public hearing, held at the Peace Palace in The Hague during The period between May 16 and 17.

 

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated – in a statement today, Friday, reported by the Malaysian news agency “Bernama”, that this is the third request submitted by it. South Africa to take additional measures since the initial interim measures granted by the International Court of Justice on 26 January 2024.

The additional interim measures relate to the urgent need to stop the Israeli military offensive in Rafah, and to facilitate unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. 

South Africa also urged Israel to submit a report to the International Court of Justice on all measures taken to comply with the interim measures.

Malaysia was represented by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamed Hassan during the public hearings on the request. The advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, at the Peace Palace on February 22, 2024.

The statement added: "The international community has a collective responsibility to demand… Israel to stop its military operations… Israeli attacks on Rafah, an area of ​​​​64 square kilometers and inhabited by more than 1.4 million Palestinian refugees, will lead to a massive humanitarian catastrophe.

The Ministry stressed Malaysia’s firm support for the establishment of an independent State of Palestine. Sovereignty, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as accepting Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
