Indonesia plans to move the capital

The Indonesian authorities are planning to build a new capital that will be called Nusantara – in honor of the poetic name for the region in which Indonesia is located.

President Joko Widodo announced such plans for the first time, following his election in 2019, but they had to be delayed due to the pandemic. Now the capital may be transferred in 2024.

The government hopes this will ease the pressure on Jakarta, a crowded and crowded city of 10 million, which suffers regular flooding and is one of the world’s fastest sinking cities due to groundwater.
Parts of North Jakarta are sinking about 25 cm per year due to subsidence.
