Urgent statement from the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate on World Press Freedom Day

Member of the Palestinian National Council, Deputy Head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, Tahseen Al-Astal, welcomed the granting by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to Press Freedom Award for media professionals and journalists in the Gaza Strip who cover the Israeli war that has been ongoing for more than six months, stressing at the same time the need to hold accountable the perpetrators of killings against Palestinian journalists in the Strip.

 

The Palestinian official said in an exclusive interview with Al-Qahira TV: Today’s news "Friday" From the Gaza Strip – “The UNESCO award constitutes justice and victory for the Palestinian journalist who has been working for more than 7 months under bombardment, destruction, persecution, and direct targeting by the Israeli occupation forces of the media, press crews in the field, and the families of journalists in Gaza.”

He stressed that this award gives a glimmer of hope to the Palestinian people in light of the tragic humanitarian situation and the current state of injustice and misery in the Gaza Strip, strongly denouncing the state of international silence regarding the ongoing Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists.

He stressed the need to hold all perpetrators of killings accountable. Against Palestinian journalists in Gaza, saying: “The Palestinian journalist works in harsh and extremely dangerous conditions as a result of the Israeli aggression, and that Palestinian journalists and their families are subjected to direct targeting by the Israeli occupation, in addition to the fact that 95% of journalists in Gaza were displaced from their homes after their homes were destroyed and their institutions were bombed.” “Completely.”

He pointed out, “More than 140 Palestinian journalists were martyred, and 33 families of journalists whose homes were destroyed over their heads in the Gaza Strip since the start of the aggression on the seventh of last October.” He praised at the same time the efforts made and the state of determination. The Palestinian journalist continues to work despite the enormous difficulties that stand in his way to cover and monitor Israeli violations in Gaza.
