Paris 2024: RATP will test smart cameras to measure crowds in the metro in real time

For the moment, it is still only a prototype, entirely developed within the RATP, but soon, this new camera system, based on artificial intelligence, will make it possible to measure crowds in real time in a train of line 14 of the Paris metro, car by car.

A box equipped with a camera will be installed in the tunnel of line 14, before arriving at Châtelet station, in the north direction of the line. He will be able to estimate the number of passengers in each car on the train. A technique based on artificial intelligence, explains Gilles Tauzin, director of innovation for the RATP group: “A first algorithm will cut out the structure of the train. The doors, the windows, etc… And a second algorithm will, at the level of the windows, count the number of silhouettes, to be able to determine a density of people and therefore a level of ‘affluence.’ The information will then be very easily visible to travelers, via a screen on the platform.

“The level of attendance will be materialized with, at the same time, a color code, green, orange, or red, depending on the level of attendance in each of the cars, but also a number of silhouettes, which will also allow people who do not distinguish colors to be able to know what information is”explains Gilles Tauzin.

The experiment will begin in mid-June, for three months. The RATP wishes to extend it to other stations on line 14 and RER B to study whether this makes the platforms more fluid and better harmonizes the distribution of passengers in the trains.
