Study: LGBT more responsible for the environment

Experts from the University of Exeter Business School have found that homosexuals are more likely to work by public transport or bicycle.

The researchers analyzed data from three million households with people of working age. As it turned out, 3% more of women and 7% of men who were same-sex couples preferred working on public transportation than the heterosexual participants in the study.

Additionally, men of same-sex couples were 69% more likely to go to work by less common means, such as cycling or walking. Also, these men were 45% more likely to work from home.

Perhaps, the fact is that homosexuals are more responsible for the environment, as the authors of the work believe. They also examined the results of a survey of 450 gay, lesbian and bisexual men about their concerns about environmental pollution, its protection and the development of alternative energy sources. It turns out that LGBT representatives are 10% more concerned about these aspects than homosexuals.

“Our study shows that men and women working in same-sex pairs transition to work in healthier and more sustainable ways than men and women in opposite-sex couples,” the researchers noted.

They believe the data will provide a different perspective on transportation and health policy. Additionally, gender norms seem to influence transportation choices – and ultimately the environment and health – which is also important to consider.
