EU warns China that it is watching its actions towards Russia
European Council President Charles Michel said the European Union has warned China that it will “watch out for any attempts” by Beijing to help Russia bypass sanctions.
“We will closely monitor any attempts to help Russia financially or militarily,” Michel said at a press conference after the EU-China summit.
Any attempt to circumvent sanctions or provide assistance to Russia will prolong the war.
According to him, the EU and China “agreed” that the special operation in Ukraine “threatens global security and the global economy”, and this is not in the interest of “neither China nor the EU”.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed during a press conference that Beijing must understand that supporting Russia could threaten its reputation.
“No citizen of the European Union will understand whether China is providing military assistance to Russia,” she said.
At the same time, the President of the European Council on Twitter did not mention Chinese President Xi Jinping among the participants in the virtual EU-China summit, the purpose of which was to persuade Beijing not to provide financial or military aid to Russia due to its activities in Ukraine.
