Russian gas stopped flowing to the Baltic states

The Baltic states – Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – no longer receive natural gas from Russia, since the beginning of April, said Uldis Bariss, chairman of the board of directors of the natural gas system operator.

He noted that the gas is being delivered by two suppliers – the Klaipeda LNG terminal and the underground gas depot in Inocalnes. The head of Conexus stressed that Russia’s statement that it would be possible to pay for the natural gas it supplies only in Russian rubles, was an indication of the need for a sharp reduction in supplies from Russia, since it can no longer be counted on.

“If there are still doubts about the reliability of Russian supplies, then these events clearly show that, from the point of view of reliability, it is no longer reliable in reality. And the sooner the better,” said Paris.

He noted that the Inčukalns gas stockpile currently contains an unusual amount of gas for this period – 7.6 TWh. This is roughly equal to what Latvia and Lithuania consume together during the winter months. So you don’t have to worry in the coming months.

This year, the Inčukalns gas storage facility has already started the injection season on February 26, much earlier than usual, in order to secure the gas reserves.

Since April, a new procedure for paying for Russian gas supplies has been introduced, introduced by a decree of the President of Russia – with the obligatory conversion of the contract currency into rubles through Gazprombank. At the moment, European Gazprom buyers maintain approximately the same applications for gas withdrawal.
