A new type of corona virus discovered in China
China’s state media reported that 13,000 new cases of COVID-19 had been recorded over the past day, among them a new subtype of the omicron strain.
According to the local authorities, the new variant comes from the BA.1.1 omicron strain, and does not match other previously identified coronavirus variants.
Earlier, Shanghai entered its largest-ever lockdown since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the capital’s 25 million residents are currently under some form of quarantine.
