Germany declares a food crisis

Veronica Grimm, a member of the German government’s Council of Experts on Economic Development, told Izvestia newspaper about the situation her country is facing as a result of the energy crisis.

According to her, the food crisis has already begun in Germany. The economist stressed that against the background of rising gas prices, the cost of fertilizers also increased, which led to a shortage.

Another factor is the expected decrease in agricultural exports from Russia and Ukraine.

“For industrialized countries, that means higher food prices, and for developing countries, that can lead to famine,” she explained.

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the rise in food, fertilizer and energy prices as a result of the situation in Ukraine could cause a global food crisis.
