Russia withdraws from the Human Rights Council

Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the organization, Gennady Kuzmin, said that Russia is ending its powers at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

“The Russian Federation has decided on the early termination of its powers as a member of the UN Human Rights Council as of April 7, 2022,” Kuzmin said.

According to him, the state will continue to fulfill its international obligations to protect human rights, and Russia intends to continue to make a significant contribution to strengthening dialogue in this field.

On April 7, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution suspending Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council for the current rotation period, that is, until 2023, after which the country will be able to return to the organization again. 93 countries supported the resolution, 24 countries voted against it, and 58 countries abstained.

According to UN rules, a country can be excluded from participating in the Human Rights Council if such a decision is supported by two-thirds of the members of the General Assembly.
