Armed convoys enter the Libyan capital

Armed columns from the cities of Al-Zawiya and Zintan, the Libyan capital, entered the Libyan city of Tripoli.

Al-Arabiya channel indicated that “more than three armed columns entered the Libyan capital, Tripoli, from the west and south.”

It was reported earlier that the 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee to resolve the crisis in Libya announced the suspension of work and accused the current head of the National Unity Government of obstructing the activities of the committee.

Also on 5 March, it was known that Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamida Dabaiba had resigned.

In February, Parliament chose a new prime minister, former Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha. At the same time, Dabaiba did not want to give up his powers.

In early February, it was reported that Dabaiba was hit in his car on the way home, but he was unharmed.

At the beginning of 2020, a joint military committee of the Libyan parties began to work in Geneva – it included five senior officers from the Government of National Unity and another five from the Libyan National Army. The purpose of the Committee’s work is to negotiate a ceasefire in the country.

In Libya, for several years, there were two parallel bodies of executive power: the Government of National Accord in Tripoli and a temporary cabinet in the east of the country, with the support of Parliament and the Libyan National Army.
