Neon Takes North American Rights To Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ Starring Renate Reinsve — Cannes

EXCLUSIVE: Neon has prebought North American rights to Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Valuethe latest project from the Norwegian director that stars Renate Reinsve.

It marks the second collaboration for Neon, Trier and Reinsve after 2021’s The Worst Person In The Worldwhich was nominated for a Best International Feature Oscar in 2022 as well as Best Original Screenplay. That project also played in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival the year prior, where it earned Reinsve the Best Actress Award.

Eskil Vogt and Trier wrote the screenplay of Sentimental Valuewhich is described as a family drama about two sisters forced to deal with their estranged father following the death of their mother. Neon is planning a 2025 theatrical release for the title.

The film is produced by Maria Ekerhovd for Mer Film, Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for Eye Eye Pictures, Lizette Jonjic and Sisse Graum for Denmark/Sweden’s Zentropa, Juliette Schrameck for Agat Films, Nathanaël Karmitz and Elisha Karmitz for MK2 Productions and Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach for Germany’s Komplizen.

The film is set to begin shooting in Norway and France in August.

Neon’s President of Acquisitions & Production Jeff Deutchman negotiated the deal with Mer Film’s Ekerhovd and Eye Eye’s Ottmar on behalf of the filmmakers. MK2 is representing the international sales rights and introduced the film to buyers in Cannes.

Trier and Vogt were nominated for an Oscar for their screenplay for The Worst Person in the Worldwhich premiered at Cannes in 2021, where Neon picked up the domestic rights. The film completed their Oslo Trilogy following Reprise (2006) and Oslo, August 31st (2011).

Reinsve is also starring in Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s Armandwhich premiered at Cannes in Un Certain Regard on Saturday. She also stars in upcoming title Handling the Undead from director Thea Hvistendahl which will also be distributed by Neon, and A Different Man from Aaron Schimberg, both of which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Neon has been active on the acquisition front here in Cannes this year, most recently picking up the North American rights to Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig and U.S. rights to Osgood Perkins title The Monkey starring Theo James.

It is repping worldwide rights to Osgood Perkins’ Keeper, starring Tatiana Maslany and Rossif Sutherland through its sales strand headed up by Kristen Figeroid. Neon also recently announced it was taking North American rights to Julia Ducournau’s Alpha and The Unknown from Arthur Harari.

The company also has Sean Baker’s newest title Anorawhich is premiering in Competition in Cannes today.
