Germany expects high rate of monkeypox in Europe

Germany expects monkeypox infection rate to rise in Europe

The German Ministry of Health has reported a possible increase in new cases of monkeypox infection in Europe, and in particular in Germany.

“Due to the numerous contacts of infected people, new cases of infection should now be expected in Europe, as well as in Germany,” the Ministry of Health said in a report to the Bundestag Health Committee.

The ministry also notes that more than 130 confirmed and probable cases of monkeypox are currently registered in the world. In Germany, as of May 22, 2022, four confirmed cases of infection were recorded – one in Munich and three in Berlin.

The German Ministry of Health does not rule out that the smallpox vaccination also protects against monkeypox. About 100 million doses of smallpox vaccine have been stored in Germany, the agency said, of which two million doses were donated to the World Health Organization.

Earlier, it became known that Belgium was the first country in the world to implement quarantine for monkeypox.
