Maria Zakharova on Ukraine’s accession to the EU: “A promise does not mean marriage”

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, responded to the words of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte that granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership is unlikely. She noted on her Telegram channel that the politician described all promises to Kiev on this topic only as “emotional statements”.

“The Prime Minister of the Netherlands has spent a lot of words explaining the obvious: ‘A promise does not mean marriage,'” Zakharova wrote.

European integration of Ukraine received a certain impulse in the middle of spring, when Brussels, against the background of the Russian operation, received Kyiv’s application to join the European Union. At the moment, European officials are studying the document in order to decide whether to grant Kyiv candidate status or not. At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities demand from Brussels not only a decision in their favor on this issue, but also, in general, a speedy entry into the union.
