Washington announces it needs 90,000 additional doses of monkeypox vaccine

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said the city government needs an additional 90,000 doses of the vaccine to combat the spread of monkeypox.

“We need more vaccines,” Bowser said. “We’ve had just over 8,000 doses. We estimate we need about 100,000 doses to meet the current needs of the target population. We definitely need more doses, and we know this work is underway.”

She noted that a monkeypox testing program has already been launched in Washington, which is based on experience gained in combating Covid-19.

Earlier, the World Health Organization Committee for Emergencies planned next week, July 21, to discuss the situation around the outbreak of monkeypox.

It is known that the WHO committee will provide Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus with information on the severity of the monkeypox outbreak and whether there is a risk of an emergency for the international community.
