The European Commission expects Belgium’s budget deficit to rise to 4.7% by the end of 2025

Brussels, 15 May / WAM / The European Commission expects Belgium’s budget deficit during 2024 to remain at 4.4 percent of GDP, to rise to 4.7 percent by the end of 2025 if its policies remain unchanged.

In its new economic indicators today, the Commission attributed the deficit to the structural rise in current spending, mainly on pensions, and the rise in interest payments on government debt. It is expected that Belgian government debt will decrease slightly from 105.2 percent in 2023 to 105.0 percent in 2024 due to… Issuing one-year Treasury bonds gave the government a large influx of cash. However, a high budget deficit threatens to push Belgium’s debt to 106.7 percent by 2025.
