Opinion "particularly divided" on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, according to our barometer

THE “European barometer” produced by Viavoice for Radio France, France Télévisions and France Médias Monde, a little over a month before the European elections of June 9, reveals Monday May 6, “a particularly divided opinion” regarding the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. 29% of respondents believe that France supports Ukraine too much militarily. A position shared by 29% of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s voters and 47% of Marine Le Pen’s voters. Furthermore, 40% of French people surveyed believe that France supports Ukraine “enough” and 16% regret too timid support.

Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is another subject of division among the French: if 42% are against it, 41% are in favor. A particularly strong position among the youngest (46%) and the oldest (46%), as well as among voters in the last presidential election of the ecologist Yannick Jadot and Emmanuel Macron.

Finally, there is a climate of international instability which promotes ambient anxiety: 48% of French people believe “likely” an attack on a NATO member country by Russia, a transpartisan fear. The risk of a “third world war” split. It is feared by one in two French people (49%), it is considered unlikely by 39% of French people.
